Halloween DIY Ravens for your wall
Time for our first Halloween Wednesday! This time I’m showing you these easy DIY Ravens to put on your wall and create your very own unkindness. (Apparently a group of ravens is called an unkindness. 2spoopy4me.) It’s quick and easy and and super pretty. JUST DO IT.
Materials:
- Black paper
- Regular paper
- Scissors
- A pen
Instructions:
Start by drawing the shape of a bird on a regular paper. This will be your template. If you don’t want to draw one yourself I’ve included my template at the end of the post.
Then cut the template out of the paper. Pro tip #1: make a rough cut first and do the fine work when you have less paper to deal with. Helps so much.
Flip it over to see if the shape is good, the lines from the sketching are so distracting. If not, cut some more, and when it looks good your template is done!Place the white bird on top of the black paper and trace a line around it. Pro tip #2: Remember that you’re going flip the black raven over so any lines from your tracing won’t show. If you want it facing a specific way, remember to draw it the other way around in this step.
Grab your scissors again and make a rough cut. (This picture btw, what was I thinking? Like this is how natural it is: I’m not left-handed… Good job me.)
Anyway, it will now look something like this. SO PRETTY.
Nah, refine it slightly. You don’t have to follow the line exactly, wing it (eyyyy) a little bit and just make them look like you want. Or follow the lines. That depends on what kind of a person you are.
Pro tip #3: do small cuts at a time. I cut way too much on the right wing here, and you can’t like glue it back on.
Gently bend the bird so it isn’t completely flat but will stick out from the wall slightly – make it three dimensional. Try not to crease it entirely though. And then repeat however many times you want! Make it an uneven amount if you don’t want it to be symmetrical later on, it’s way easier to compose into something that looks good then.
Roll up some tape and put on the backside.
And then just stick it to wherever you want it on your wall.
This is the most fun part, as you get to play around with it and compose your unkindness. I decided to combine them with the big paper raven I made this January. Check it out here. For the same effect just make different sized birds if you want, but I like how it looks with just small ones.
And then you’re done!
See how the bending of them made them more three dimensional? YEAH.
So that was my first Halloween DIY for the month, I will be uploading a DIY every Wednesday until Halloween!
I like that it’s just subtle and not like overly Halloween. I could totally keep this up all year. Maybe I’ll make more, because honestly it’s so super easy.
Check out my friend Alicia’s Halloween DIY. Me and Alicia are doing this little Halloween project together, and will both be uploading DIYs. Next Wednesday will be something completely different, so get excited!
