artists to love: India Lawton

I found India Lawton the other day, the artist behind the most powerful series of pictures ever: Scars – the art of mangling photos. It was so intense and fierce that I was just completely blown away, like IT’S SO AMAZING.

There’s something about the pure emotion in this that just makes me go bananas. Because it really is the art of mangling photos, as she has burned and scratched photos until there is nothing left but raw expression. The pictures suddenly become something more than they were before.Scars by India Lawton. Mangled, scratched and burned pictures that offer so much emotion you can hardly bare it.

The violently scratched faces are almost too symbolic to bare it – there’s so much emotion. I imagine it would’ve been very therapeutic to make these – to just get to express all the anger from all the times anyone ever wronged you. (Don’t you just want to try it?! I do!! I think it would help.)

Don’t they always destroy photos in movies once some douche bag has cheated on them or something like that? Like they have some ritual where they burn pictures and sage and it’s kind of like they’re witches. That’s what this makes me think of. Witches. Always a good thing to think about.

So thank you, India Lawton. Thank you for being magnificent. (Check out her website here.)

Maybe these mean something completely different to India Lawton herself, but the brillance with these is that they really make you think and feel. What do they make you feel?
